VALE KEN READ - HONORARY PATRON AUSTRALIAN BOX LACROSSE
Australian Box Lacrosse lost a great man last weekend. Ken Read who passed away 13 July 2024 loved his family, life in general and of course lacrosse (Box Lacrosse).
He touched so many people during his 81 years. We will always remember his infectious smile when he greeted you the firm handshake or the hug. He loved to meet new people and catch up with old acquaintances. He certainly had the ability to bring us all together and enjoy the moment.
Most of us will remember Ken in lacrosse as a player, coach, referee and spectator. He first became involved in Box Lacrosse back in the late 60’s from those early days in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne he fell in love with Box Lacrosse. In 1978 the Australian Lacrosse Association appointed Ken Read as the first ever Head Coach to lead an Australian box lacrosse team. Travelling to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and competed in the 1978 Commonwealth Games.
In 1980, Victorian Lacrosse Association, now Lacrosse Victoria, named the trophy awarded to the winner of the Victorian Premier Box Lacrosse League the Read Cup, in honour of Ken’s sustained involvement both domestically and internationally.
Ken’s love of the game and his desire for Box Lacrosse to grow continued until the end. He endorsed and sponsored the Australian Junior Box Lacrosse team that competed overseas each year since 2019 in the IIJL World Junior Lacrosse Championships and the Commonwealth Cup held each year at the Alan Lewer Box Court.
Our deep and sincere condolences to family and friends. Ken will be sadly missed.
